week 1

In the creation hymn, it is immediately reflective of the idea that existence came from non-existence. This is illustrated at the start of the short hymn in line one where the speaker states, ” There was neither non-existence nor existence then;”. The hymn brings about a feeling of uncertainty which is proven through the speakers tone, as he continuously brings forth unanswerable questions that challenge the reader, while he himself leaves them unanswered. For example in line six, where he asks, “who really knows? who will here proclaim it? whence was it produced? whence is this creation?”. The speaker perhaps follows the idea of Panentheism, acknowledging multiple gods who ” came afterwards”. But concluding theres one creator/deity, referring to him as “the one who looks down on it…only he knows”. “It” being us, the creation.
